    MALAWI'S FIRST NATIONAL OIL COMPANY WAS ???UALLY LAUNCHED ON TUESDAY, WHEN ECONOMIC AFFAIRS MINISTER, MR. ALEKE BANDA, OFFICIALLY OPENED THE COMPANY'S FIRST PETROL STATION. THE NEW COMPANY, OILCOM, IS A JOINT MALAWI-PORTUGUESE VENTURE.

    OILCOM IS A PRIVATE COMPANY, WITH A REGISTERED CAPITAL OF GBP10,000 STERLING. SEVENTY PER CENT OF THE SHARES ARE OWNED BY A PORTUGUESE BUSINESSMAN, MR. MANOEUL BOULLOSA, AND THE REMAINING 20 PER CENT IS HELD BY THE FARMERS MARKETING BOARD IN MALAWI, WHO ARE THE COMPANY'S SOLE AGENTS IN MALAWI.

    OILCOM WILL BUY IT'S SUPPLIES FROM THE PORTUGUESE OIL COMPANY SONAREP, WHICH HAS REFINERIES IN LOURENCO MARQUES, IN PORTUGUESE MOZAMBIQUE.

    THE FIRST PETROL STATION IS SITUATED IN BLANTYRE, ON THE ROAD TO ZOMBA, AND IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE COMPANY'S HEADQUARTERS. OTHER STATIONS ARE DUE TO OPEN, IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, SHORTLY.

    IN HIS ADDRESS, MR. BANDA SAID HE HOPED TO SEE OILCOM STATIONS DOTTED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. HE ASKED FOR MORE AND MORE INVESTMENT IN MALAWI, AS THE PAGE OF DEVELOPMENT INCREASES.

    THE CHAIRMAN OF THE FARMERS MARKETING BOARD, MR. D.R. KATENGEZA, SPOKE AT THE CEREMONY AND EXPRESSED THE COMPANY'S PLEASURE AT BEING APPOINTED AGENTS.
