Background: Indonesian President Suharto held talks with the Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki? in Tokyo on Monday (July 7) during a three-day stopover on his way home from visiting Iran, Yugoslavia, Canada and the United States.

Officially President Suharto was in Japan for the signing of a contract between Indonesia and a Japanese business consortium, to build a huge hydro-electric centre and aluminium complex in the Asahan River district of Northern Sumatra.

But dominating the background to the talks, was Indonesia's post-Vietnam attitude towards China. The President said Indonesia would eventually follow the example of its South-East-Asian partners in its relations with China.

Of the four countries along with Indonesia in the Association of South-East-Asian Nations, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines have established diplomatic relations with China -- and Singapore is expected to follow.

With the two leaders at the talks were the two countries' Foreign Ministers -- Adam Malik of Indonesia and Kiichi Miyazawa of Japan. They also discussed future trade and closer co-operation between South-East Asian nations.
