    THE PEOPLE OF GHANA ON MONDAY CELEBRATED THE FEBRUARY 24 REVOLUTION OF 1966 IN WHICH THE REGIME WAS TOPPLED BY ELEMENTS OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT. GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NLC, URGED THE COUNTRY TO PREPARE ITSELF FOR A RETURN TO CIVILIAN RULE AND RESUMPTION OF PARTY POLITICAL ACTIVITY.

    GENERAL ANKRAH MADE HIS SPEECH AFTER REVIEWING A LARGE MILITARY PARADE STAGED TO COMMEMORATE THE OVERTHROW OF EX-PRESIDENT NKRUMAH, WHO IS NOW LIVING IN EXILE IN GUINEA.

    IN HIS ADDRESS GENERAL ANKRAH DESCRIBED THE COUNTRY AS "ON THE THRESHOLD OF A TRANSITION TO CIVIL RULE", BUT GAVE NO INDICATION OF WHEN THE BAN ON PARTY POLITICAL ACTIVITY WOULD BE LIFTED.

    THE GENERAL TOOK THE SALUTE AS SOLDIERS, SAILORS, POLICE AND SCHOOL CHILDREN MARCHED PAST IN THE PARADE IN BLACK STAR SQUARE.

    THE ANNIVERSARY WAS ALSO MARKED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY BY RELIGIOUS SERVICES, PARADES AND ROUTE MARCHES.
