    THE PHILIPPINES CELEBRATED ON SUNDAY ITS 68TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE. IN MANILA, PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS TOOK THE SALUTE AT A PARADE IN THE CITY'S LUNETA PARK.

    PRESIDENT MARCOS FIRST REVIEWED A GUARD OF HONOUR. THEN, WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN, HE WATCHED THE PARADE FROM A DECORATED DAIS. THE PARADE FEATURED A FLY-PAST JET AIRCRAFT AND A REVIEW OF MILITARY VEHICLES, INCLUDING CADETS.

    FOR THE FIRST TIME, MEMBERS OF THE PROPOSED FILIPINO CONTINGENT FOR SOUTH VIETNAM MADE A PUBLIC APPEARANCE. VETERANS OF THE SPANISH WAR AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR ALSO TOOK PART IN THE MARCH PAST.

    THE PHILIPPINES FORMERLY CELEBRATED INDEPENDENCE DAY ON 4 JULY TO COMMEMORATE THE DATE IN 1946 WHEN IT RECEIVED ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM THE UNITED STATES. BUT WHEN PRESIDENT DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL ASSUMED OFFICE IN 1962, HE CHANGED THE DATE FROM 4 JULY TO 12 JUNE, BECAUSE IT ON THIS DAY IN 1898 THAT THE FILIPINOS FIRST PROCLAIMED THEIR INDEPENDENCE FROM SPANISH RULE.
