Background: INTRODUCTION: The world's top yachting nations have begun their quest for one of the sport's most prestigious trophies -- the Admiral's Cup. And nowhere is the preparation more intense than in the country which holds the Cup -- Australia.

SYNOPSIS: Choosing the team to defend the Cup involves a series of hard-fought elimination races. The trials are being held on Port Phillip Bay, near Melbourne. One of the fancied contenders is Inch by Winch.

The Western Australian yacht Police Car was in the team which won the Admiral's Cup in 1979. Most of the 12 yachts taking part though are new. Of them Challenge, 14 metres long, is the largest and the highest rating.

Challenge easily won the first of the 14-race series but faced stiffer competition as the trial continued. The competition extends from March 28 to April 3 with the Australians confident that their exhaustive trailing will make them again the team to beat.

At the end of the elimination series three yachts will be chosen, They'll be shipped half-way around the world to Cowes on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. And there, next July and August, they'll be competing against twenty or so of the world's leading yachting nations, hoping to repeat their victory in the 1981 Admiral's Cup.
