    A huge underground control centre at Taverny, 18 miles from Paris is the "nerve" centre fort he operation of France's A-bomber squadrons. The central control room is nearly two hundred feet underground - dep in a disused mine.

    France's A-bombers, the Mirage IV is a two man craft capable of operating at an altitude of more than seven miles. In addition it has an operational range of some thirteen hundred miles. A special feature of the Mirage IV is special device devised to counteract the homing apparatus in use on modern missiles. The bombers, which travel at a speed above Mach 2 are capable of delivering a plutonium bomb with an explosive power equivalent to ten thousand of the bombs used in World War Two. By the end of this year, fifty Mirage IV bombers should be in service with the French Air Force.

    (France's first H-bomb is due to be tested in the Gambier Islands, near Tahiti in 1968. The following year France is hoping to introduce her first H-bomb missiles, and nuclear submarines.)
