  • Description

Several thousand people watched the Sept 10 ceremony which changed the status of Northern Rhodesia's capital, Lusaka, from a town to a city. Governor Sir Evelyn Hone handed the Letters Patent conferring the city's new status to the Mayor, A.J. Fisher, while trumpeters of the Northern Rhodesia Regiment sounded a fanfare.

When the new Civic Centre had been blessed by the Bishop of Northern Rhodesia, the Governor officially opened the new GBP182,000 building and unveiled a plaque. At the end of the ceremony Sir Evelyn read congratulatory messages from the Queen and the Colonial Secretary Iain Macleod.

Among those present were visiting Mayors and Mayoresses from towns all over the Federation including Salisbury and Bulawayo in Southern Rhodesia.
