BOSTON'S WORST FIRE IN A CENTURY SWEPT FOUR BLOCKS IN A SOUTH BOSTON TENEMENT AREA ON FRIDAY, DESTROYING 35 BUILDINGS AND DRIVING A THOUSAND PERSONS FROM THEIR HOMES
THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE WERE LEFT HOMELESS, 256 INJURED, OF WHOM 31 WERE HOSPITALIZED.

THE ROARING FIRE GENERATED ITS OWN WIND AND WAS FINALLY CONTAINED BY THE METHOD DEVELOPED IN HAMBURG, GERMANY, DURING BOMBING RAIDS IN WORLD WAR TWO. FIREMEN AND EQUIPMENT FORMED AN "L" ON THE SIDE FACING THE WIND, PARTIALLY CUTTING OFF THE SUPPLY OF OXYGEN.

FIREMEN ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE HOSED THE FLAMES BUT THE HEAT WAS SO INTENSE THEY COULD NOT APPROACH CLOSER THAN 500 FEET.

THE FIRE STARTED ON A REAR PORCH OF ONE OF THE TENEMENTS AND QUICKLY SPREAD. FLAMES LEAPED 150 FEET HIGH; TOWERS OF BLACK SMOKE COULD BE SEEN FOR 20 MILES. TRAFFIC ON A NEARBY EXPRESSWAY HAD TO BE RE-ROUTED.

A THOUSAND FIREMEN FROM 25 COMMUNITIES FOUGHT THE BLAZE; 200 POLICE PATROLLED ALL NIGHT TO PREVENT LOOTING.
