    IN PARIS TONIGHT (FRIDAY) POLICE CLASHED WITH LEFT-WING DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED NEAR THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN THE PLACE DE LA CONCORDE TO PROTEST AGAINST THE AMERICAN AIR ATTACKS ON MILITARY TARGETS IN NORTH VIETNAM. THE DEMONSTRATION HAD BEN CALLED EARLIER TODAY AT A MEETING OF MEMBERS OF THE FRENCH COMMUNIST PARTY AND TO HER LEFT-WING ORGANISATIONS.

    BEFORE THE DEMONSTRATION WAS DUE TO BEGIN, HUNDREDS OF PARIS POLICE ARMED WITH RIFLES SEALED OFF THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY BY SETTING UP BARRIERS. THEY ALLOWED ONLY EMBASSY OFFICIALS, PRESSMEN AND RESIDENTS AT A NEARBY HOTEL TO PASS THROUGH THE BARRIERS.

    ABOUT 800 DEMONSTRATORS WERE CHANNELLED BY THE POLICE ACROSS THE PLACE DE LA CONCORDE IN FRONT TOP THE EMBASSY. THEY WERE KEPT ABOUT 200 YARDS FROM THE EMBASSY DOORS.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS, MOST OF THEM YOUNG, CHANTED "PEACE IN VIETNAM" AND "JOHNSON IS A MURDERER." SEVERAL WHO ATTEMPTED TO BREAK THROUGH THE POLICE CORDON WERE HUSTLED INTO POLICE VANS.
