  • Description

Broadway' fabulous success "My Fair Lady" - the record breaking musical based on Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion", for which seats are booked months ahead in London - opened in Copenhagen, Jan 2.

At one of the Danish capital's principal theatres there was all the excitement of a gala performance. Among the crowds in the foyer - Lars Schmidt and his wifed, Ingrid Bergman.

Lars Schmidt holds the exclusive rights for the production of "My First Lady" in Scandinavia, but in spite of all the glitter of opening night he was a man with a headache. Twice he had to postpone the first performance, originally planned for Dec 26. First the Danish actress cast for Eliza's part fell ill, then her understudy turned out to be unable to carry the part.

Delays proved very costly, and although was heavily covered by insurance he eventually found himself faced with an initial loss about 140,000 Kroner (about GBP14,000). Still, there is hope for Lars, for if the musical becomes as much of a box-office hit in copenhagen as it did in New York and London, he will soon be in the pink.
