  • Description

The crippled spaceship Apollo 13 looped around the moon Tuesday night and fired its rockets for four minutes and 24 seconds-a manoeuvre that sent the astronauts on a fast and more accurate course toward a splashdown in the Pacific, a drastic change of their plans to land on the moon.

Under the present plan Apollo 13 should splash down in the mid-Pacific at 1213 P.M. New York time Friday. The U.S.S. Iwo Jima, two primary recovery ship is steaming toward the site about 600 miles southeast of American Samoa.

The Astronauts, using the still-attached lunar module as a space "lifeboat" providing oxygen, electricity and propulsion, were following what Mission Control decided after hours of intensive study and computer calculations, was the least risky strategy for their returning to earth.

The plans call for the astronauts to keep the lunar module attached to the command module until they come within an hour or so of the earth's atmosphere. They will then crawl into the command module, shut the hatch and jettison the lunar module. Although the command module's primary electric power system has failed, the vehicle has enough battery power to guide it through re-entry. It also has an oxygen bottle.
