  • Description

FRENCH MILITARY PATROLS AND WEST BERLIN KEPT WATCH ST BERLIN'S FRENCH SECTOR BORDER, MAY 26, AS STEEL-HELMETED EAST GERMAN TROOPS SUPERVISED REPAIR WORK ON THE CONCRETE DIVIDING WALL AFTER A SERIES OF EXPLOSIONS DURING THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING.

EAST BERLIN WORKMEN USED CEMENT BLOCKS TO BRICK UP A SIX-FOOT BREACH IN THE WALL NEAR BERNAUERSTRASSE, WHERE EAST BERLIN'S FORBIDDING BORDER OBSTACLES STRADDLE A TRAM LINE THAT ONCE CONNECTED THE FRENCH WITH THE RUSSIAN SECTOR OF THE CITY.

THERE IS NO RELIABLE INFORMATION ON THE NUMBER OF EXPLOSIONS OR THE BACKGROUND TO THESE INCIDENTS. ONE THEORY IS THAT ANTI-COMMUNIST GROUPS MAY HAVE BECOME ACTIVE IN EAST BERLIN, ANOTHER IS THAT THE EXPLOSIONS MAY HAVE BEEN SET OFF INTENTIONALLY TO SERVE A PRETEXT FOR REPRISALS BY THE EAST GERMAN AUTHORITIES AGAINST THE SHOOTING OF A GUARD IN A BORDER SKIRMISH EARLIER IN THE WEEK.

A PROTEST BY THE EAST GERMAN MINISTER O THE INTERIOR CLAIMED THAT EXPLOSIVES HAD BEEN THROWN ACROSS THE WALL FROM WEST BERLIN. THE MINISTER SAID: "THESE AND OTHER INCIDENTS FORM A CHAIN OF SYSTEMATIC ATTACKS AGAINST ORDER AND SECURITY AT THE STATE FRONTIER."
