  • Description

The former Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi, has received an enthusiastic welcome in her old constituency of Rae Bareli. It was her first visit (on Sunday 18th September) since losing her parliamentary seat at the elections last March. Although showered with rose petals and garlands in a number of stops during her 59-mile (80 Kilometre) drive, there were also reports that her public meeting in Rae Bareli ended in chaos.

SYNOPSIS: A large crowd was waiting for Mrs. Gandhi at the railway station in Lucknow, the capital of India's sprawling Uttar Pradesh state. Before going on by road to her former constituency, Mrs. Gandhi drove through the streets of Lucknow in an open jeep. It was a triumphant beginning with crowds cheering her most of the way. Only six months ago the people of Rae Bareli cut short her parliamentary career.

For the three hour drive from Lucknow to her former constituency, Mrs. Gandhi switched to a car. En route, at the town of Tali Bagh, a group of demonstrators waved black flags and shouted for her to go back. But they were outnumbered by Mrs. Gandhi's supporters. Her visit, according to observers in Delhi, is to probe the public response to her possible re-emergence on the political scene. Over the next few weeks, Mrs. Gandhi is planning extensive tours in other parts of India.

At least one meeting was disrupted by ??? stones were thrown and ??? were brandished, ??? she continued to talk over the ??? and admitted that mistakes had been made during her 21 months emergency ??? In a scathing attack on Prime Minister Moraji Desai's ruling Janata Party, she said freedom was in peril and was undefended.
