  • Description

Latest and largest Henry Moore sculpture, a "reclining female figure" called "Silhouette Au Repos", was installed in the grounds of the new UNESCO building in Place de Fontenoy, October 16.

Henry Moore, filmed inspecting his work, said that before he started work he spent six months pondering on what UNESCO stood for and those thoughts had inevitably influenced the design - but the sculpture meant whatever anyone wanted it to mean.

Mr. Moore said that he had worked on and off for a year in the Apennine village of Querceta, where Michelangelo once quarried.

In white Travertine marble, the figure occupies a commanding position where it catches the sun at all angles.

The piece is one of 11 works of art commissioned by UNESCO for the new headquarters which will be opened on November 3.
