    CHILDREN OF BRITISH COMMONWEALTH SERVICEMEN IN MALAYSIA ARE STUDYING IN THE WORLD'S LARGEST BRITISH ARMY SCHOOL BUILD IN SINGAPORE AT A COST OF SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND POUNDS STERLING.

    THE ALL AIR-CONDITIONED COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL IS NAMED SAINT JOHN'S. IT WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED BY THE ARMY'S COMMANDER IN THE FAR EAST, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL SIR ALAN JOLLY, ON OCTOBER 10.

    THE NEW SCHOOL HAS 26 CLASSROOMS, NINE SCIENCE LABORATORIES, 11 OTHER ROOMS FOR PRACTICAL WORK (METALWORK, CARPENTRY, NEEDLEWORK, DOMESTIC SCIENCE AND ART), GYMNASIUM AND TWO ASSEMBLY HALLS.

    THE ONE THOUSAND CHILDREN ATTENDING THE SCHOOL -- MORE THAN HALF ARE GIRLS -- ARE BEING TAUGHT BY SIXTY-NINE TEACHERS.

    OTHER SERVICE SCHOOLS IN SINGAPORE ARE OPEN MORNINGS ONLY, BECAUSE OF THE AIR-CONDITIONING AT SAINT JOHN'S PUPILS THERE HAVE A FULL DAY'S STUDY. MID-DAY MEALS ARE PROVIDED.

    TWO NEW BOARDING HOUSES, ONE FOR BOYS AND THE OTHER FOR GIRLS, ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

    THE OPENING OF SAINT JOHN'S HAS SIGNALLED THE CHANGE TO COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION FOR SERVICE CHILDREN IN MALAYSIA.

    OUTDOOR FACILITIES INCLUDE A SWIMMING POOL WITH UNDERWATER LIGHTING, SIX TENNIS COURTS AND RECREATION GROUNDS THAT WILL ACCOMMODATE SIX FOOTBALL PITCHES, AND A PAVILION.
