    The President of Sierra Leone, Siaka Stevens, opening the country's fourth Session of the second Parliament last week (18 June), warned that the entire machinery of government needs a complete overhaul.

    SYNOPSIS: The opening of parliament is always a colourful spectacle in Sierra Leone. Ministers, judges and visiting diplomats attend the ceremony which takes place once a year. Sierra Leone is proud of its non-aligned policy but lately has increased efforts in support of African unity.

    President Siaka Stevens was re-elected for a second five year term in April this year. The 71-year old veteran politician has been involved in public affairs for most of his adult life. In his opening address he spoke about the poor financial position of the country, and announced the formation of a committee to carry out as re-structure of government.
