Background: Four waders from Nicosia prison have been remanded for eight days on suspicion of helping two convicted would-be assassins to escape last week. (28 Oct). The two escapers had been convicted of trying to kill Archbishop Makarias by sheeting at his helicopter in March 1970. The helicopter pilot was inured, but managed to get his machine down safely, and the Archbishop walked out unhurt. In 1970 the two men, together with two others, were jailed for 14 years. On saturday they escaped by unlocking their cell doors and leaving the prison through a gate used to admit provisions. This raised a suspicion that the two men had inside help, and the four warders were arrested for questioning.
