    At least forty-five people have died after a freak storm which dumped seven inches (180 mm) of rain on the South Korean capital of Seoul and surrounding countryside in four hours on Saturday (17 July).

    Thirty people died in Seoul itself as houses collapsed and landslides rolled down from the high ground. The Government relief committee set up to cope with the disaster reported that at least four people were still missing and feared drowned after a ferry with 40 aboard was carried away by a swollen river and smashed into pieces when it hit a bridge.

    More than 3,000 people are homeless as a result of the storm--the worst in South Korea for 30 years. About 2,000 of the homeless were accommodated in tents pitched in city market places of southern Seoul The Government relief committee estimated property damage at about 250,000 sterling.

    SYNOPSIS: At least forty-five people have died and at least four are still missing and feared drowned after a freak storm in the South Korean capital of Seoul on Saturday. More than seven inches of rain fall in four hours during the storm--worst in South Korea for 30 years.

    More than three thousand people were left homeless after landslide and flooding destroyed or flooded in the city and the surrounding areas...many of them were accommodated in tents pitched in the market areas.

    The Government relief committee set up to cope with the disaster reported that four people are still missing after a ferry with 40 cn board was carried away by swollen river and smashed against a bridge.

    Thirty people were killed in the city alone when houses and walls collapsed as landslides rolled down from the high ground...six people died in the worst single accident when four houses collapsed in the western section.
