Dr. Heins Nordhoff, Director General of the German Volkswagen company was interviewed in New York, November 12, during a visit to accept the Sperry award, given for distinguished contributions to the development of transportation.
Names as recipients, together with Dr. Nordhoff, were the late Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, designer of the car, and their co-workers.
This is the first time that the award, one of America's leading engineering honours, has been given to an automobile manufacturer - and it is also the first time it has been presented to a foreign engineer or engineering team.
The citation says that the car has "made available to the world an automobile of small size for multiple uses, with unique attributes of universality, of low initial and operating costs, of simplicity of design, having ease of maintenance: comfort with adequate performance; and suitable for rural and urban use."
The award, established in 1955, commemorates the achievements of Dr. Elmer Ambrose Sperry, pioneer in the development of the gyrocompass and other navigational aids, as well as improved automobiles.
