  • Description

Chile's President Salvador Allende has denied "selling the sovereign rights of his country"--now fighting an economic crisis--during his 14-day overseas tour that ended on Thursday (14 December).

The President was replying to Opposition criticism that credit agreements signed with the Soviet Union meant that the State was dependent on Soviet aid.

President Allende returned to a warm welcome from thousands of his supporters at Santiago airport after his busy tour, which also took him to the Untied Nations.

He was met by the Minister of the Interior, General Carlos Prats Gonzales, who ruled the country in his absence. General Prats was one of three military men brought into the Cabinet after a "strike" against the coalition government that delayed President Allende's overseas tour by more than a month.

While overseas, the President visited Mexico, addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York and flew to Moscow for economic aid talks, before visiting Algeria and Morocco on his way to Cuba.

He spent four days with Cuban Premier Fidel Castro in an informal reunion. On his way home had stopovers in Venezuela and Peru.

One of his first acts on returning was the signing, with General Prats, of the document handing back control of the country to the President.
