Background: General Gnassingbe Eyadema-Togolese Head of State-arrived in the Gabon Republic's capital, Libreville, on Saturday (15 March) for a one-week official visit.
He was greeted at the airport by his Gabonese counterpart, President Omar Bongo. This is the first time that President Eyadema has visited Gabon, although President Bongo has been to Lome many times-notably for the OCAM (Organisation Commune Africaine et Mauricienne) summit in April 1972.
Great importance is being given locally to President Eyadema's visit, and several agreements between the two nations are expected before the end of the visit.
It is also likely that Togo will negotiate for the purchase of crude oil from Gabon to supply the refinery now under construction in the port area of Lome. In fact, Togo has already such an agreement with Nigeria. But the Lome Government feels it expedient to diversify its crude-oil sources, and is also looking towards Libya.
