  • Description

The United States Army, in an effort to halt Vietcong infiltration and sabotage on the Saigon River, has begun using small fast moving boats similar to the types used to tow water skiers. The 21 foot (7 metre) long fibreglass vessels patrol the river near the banks and intercept the sampans which use the waterways.

Each ski boat is armed with a M-60 machine gun on the bow. This along with the weapons carried by the crew, which usually numbers between two and six, makes up the armament of the craft.

Each patrol is a virtual expedition. The vessels leave base and travel in formation up the river. Constant surveillance is kept of the river bank and radio messages with the base keep the men informed of latest military activity in their area. Any sampans encountered during the mission are searched thoroughly for weapons. A patrol lasts several days. Supplies are obtained from American units on the shore.

The major objective is to constantly harass the Vietcong and make them think twice about using the Saigon River as a supply route.
