Background: The 200,000 French shops supporting the Government-sponsored anti-inflation drive by voluntary price cuts were crowded on Monday (2 September), the first day of the campaign.
Most supermarkets and larger stores have backed the campaign enthusiastically, but many militant small shopkeepers have refused to take part. "Operation Price Brake" is what the Government has optimistically called the three month campaign, in the hope it will be able to curb the French inflation rate now running at an annual rate of 16 percent.
The shops participating in the campaign have cut their prices of school items and certain food products by five percent. They are distinguished by red notices in their windows and a distinctive boxed arrow pointing down.
With the new school year just about to start, M. Fourcade, the French Finance Minister, proposed reductions on school items during the first month of the campaign. In the second month, prices on household goods are also being reduced five percent, and in the third month all clothing prices are to be brought down.
If the campaign is successful, the Government hopes progressively to curb inflation over the coming months to achieve a price rise level of no more than 6 percent by the end of the year.
