  • Description

THREE ARABS WERE KILLED AND 11 PEOPLE, INCLUDING FOUR BRITISH SOLDIERS, WERE WOUNDED AS ANTI-BRITISH VIOLENCE FLARED IN ADEN YESTERDAY. THE STREET FIGHTING TOOK PLACE IN THE MAALLA AND STEAMER POINT AREA. MOST OF THE CASUALTIES WERE IN STEAMER POINT WHERE ABOUT 300 MEN OF THE FIRST BATTALION, PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN REGIMENT OF YORKSHIRE, WERE INVOLVED FOR NEARLY FIVE HOURS IN AN INTERMITTENT GUN BATTLE WITH ARAB NATIONALISTS HIDING IN BACK STREETS.

THE ARAB NATIONALISTS LAUNCHED THEIR ATTACKS TO MARK THE FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMED UPRISING AGAINST BRITISH RULE. THEY OPENED FIRE WITH MORTARS AND AUTOMATIC WEAPONS AS MEN OF THE PRINCE OF WALES'S HANDED OVER SECURITY DUTY IN STEAMER POINT TO ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOS. THE PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN REGIMENT WAS ON ITS LAST FULL DAY OF ACTIVE SERVICE IN ADEN. THE FOUR SOLDIERS WERE NOT WOUNDED SERIOUSLY.

ALL FIRING IN STEAMER POINT CEASED EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON, BUT TROOPS MAINTAINED THEIR GROUND AND SEARCHED ALL ARABS LEAVING THE BACK STREETS FOR HIDDEN ARMS.

THE LAST REPORTED SHOOTING INCIDENT INVOLVING BRITISH FORCES WAS ON THE FIRST OF THIS MONTH WHEN AN ARAB GUNMAN SHOT DEAD A WEST INDIAN SOLDIER, SERVING WITH THE BRITISH ARMY, IN THE BACK STREETS OF STEAMER POINT.

THE MARINE COMMANDOS ARRIVED IN ADEN FIVE DAYS AGO. THEY HAVE TAKEN OVER SECURITY DUTIES IN STEAMER POINT AND WILL COVER THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE REMAINING BRITISH TROOPS FROM ADEN PRIOR OR SOUTH ARABIA'S INDEPENDENCE NEXT JANUARY.
