  • Description

Central Buenos Aires -- the capital of Argentina -- was rocked by a series of bomb blasts in the early hours of Tuesday (25 June) morning.

In all, fourteen bombs shook the centre of the capital. They were placed outside the premises of foreign-owned businesses and exploded within an hour.

The blasted premises included the Coca Cola factory, the Ford motor plant and premises of the Bank of London and South America. Other businesses to suffer were the Bank of Boston, the Bank of America, the Bank of Canada, the electrical firm Phillips, the Italian Pirelli Company and a fire of textile importers.

Shortly after the hour's chain of blasts the United States Embassy was machine-gunned from a moving car. The front of the building and a parked police car were peppered with bullets.

Many of the buildings were seriously damaged and it was a miracle there were no casualties, police said.

The bombs went off while the streets were crowded and caused alarm in a big crowd gathered at a city-centre open-air concert.
