• Short Summary

The first 300 troops to take part in a combined N.A.F. and Army high speed?

  • Description

The first 300 troops to take part in a combined N.A.F. and Army high speed airlift exercise, operation "Quickstep," landed at Icris airfield here from Britain today, Monday February 17th. They brought with them seven tons of equipment and six Land-Rovers with trailers.

Another 200 men, three tons of equipment and five more vehicles with trailers were due today, February 18th. The exercise is part of the development of a "fire brigade" organization which could be flown at high speed to any trouble centre.

While here the troops, from the strategic reserve in Britain, are being exercised with British troops stationed locally in the first stages of an action against an imaginary threat from a neighbouring state. Tripoli was chosen only because it provides the requirements of the exercise.

The troops are being flown in a fleet of five Hastings and five Beverley piston-engined planes, and in Count jets of R.A.F. Transport Command.
