Background: In what was described as the most sombre Christmas message of his reign, Pope Paul told the crowd that the Christmas feast stirred doubts and questions, as well as joy, in the hearts of intelligent men. Reuters' news agency said the message underlined the Pope's distress and heaviness of heart -- repeatedly stated in the week leading up to Christmas -- over the suspension of the Vietnam peace negotiation sand the subsequent intensification of hostilities.

The 75-year-old Pontiff, climaxing his Christmas celebrations, presented Christ as an example of man's defects and weaknesses, as well as of his beauty. The Pope described Christmas as the enchantment of human life finally attained in its reality, and said that all men should rejoice in this.

Christmas, he said, was the hour for natural contemplation. The Pope said that for the one who knows how to taste its authentic joy, Christmas reveals the interior world of man, who is usually deafened or lulled.
