  • Description

Iraqi Premier, General Kassem, took the salute at a military parade in Baghdad's Liberation Square , July 14, second anniversary of the 1958 revolution which overthrew the monarchy and Premier Nuri Es Said. Representatives of foreign states were present by invitation.

Although military power featured strongly in the anniversary parade, other aspects of Iraqi life were not neglected. Ministries, Trade Unions and other public associations had their own floats carrying suitable tableaux; Iraq Airways towed a model Viscount airliner, the Ministry of Petroleum a model oil refinery. And to recall past glories of Mesopotamia, the Land of the Two Rivers which cradled civilisation and is now Iraq, armoured Babylonians and Assyrians with their exotic ladies drove by in gilded chariots.
