TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 5): This is very, very good meat, the French lamb is a very good lamb. From what I can gather, we've just asked one or two of the wholesalers that the price are, it seems to be about 100 per cent more than I make on my lamb. I'm a wholesaler really you see and I'm charging high prices at the moment.



QUESTION: So it's better but more expensive?



ANSWER: Oh it's much better, but it's much more expensive. QUESTION - Working it out there we worked it out at about nine and six a carcass, and how much are you selling yours for?



ANSWER: We're four and six for the same thing this week, and they're nine and six here, so that's five shillings more, more than twice as much.



(SEQ. 7): Up till now they looked upon the French farmer as an ignorant peasant farmer, but knowing them for some time I know that they're not.



QUESTION: What would you like to tell the rest of the farmers that aren't here, that couldn't come and see for themselves?



ANSWER: That we shall have to change our breeding policy to get a leaner early maturing animal and we shall have to change our standard of dressing so that we can compete with the people in France.



QUESTION: Is there a great opportunity for British farmers?



ANSWER: Tremendous opportunity.

Background: For many people in Britain the main question if Britain does enter the European Common Market is how it will affect the cost of living. A group of British farmers has just visited France to find out for themselves the standard of their competitors' meat, and the prices. It was a purely fact-finding mission - and though they confirmed that French prices are more than double the prices in Britain, they were also struck by the high quality of the meat.
