  • Description

BRITAIN AND ALGERIA ARE EXPECTED TO START TALKS IN ALGIERS TOMORROW (MONDAY) TO DECIDE THE FUTURE OF THEIR CONSULAR, CULTURAL AND TRADE RELATIONS, FOLLOWING THE BREAK IN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS OVER BRITAIN'S RHODESIAN POLICY ANNOUNCED LATE LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY).

IN A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED IN ALGIERS TONIGHT (SUNDAY) FOLLOWING PREMIER BOUMEDIENNE'S FIVE-DAY VISIT TO THE SOVIET UNION, BOTH COUNTRIES PLEDGE THEMSELVES TO GIVE ALL POSSIBLE SUPPORT TO RHODESIAN AFRICAN NATIONALISTS. THE PLEDGE TO SUPPORT THE "PEOPLE OF ZIMBABWE IN THEIR JUST STRUGGLE FOR LIBERTY AND AUTHENTIC NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE" IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST YET MADE BY THE SOVIET UNION ON THE SUBJECT. ALGERIA AND THE SOVIET UNION ALSO PROCLAIMED TOTAL SUPPORT OF THE RECENT O.A.U. RESOLUTION ON RHODESIA CALLING ON MEMBER STATES TO BREAK OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN IF THE SMITH REGIME WAS NOT CRUSHED BY DECEMBER 15.

COLONEL BOUMEDIENNE RETURNED TO ALGIERS FROM MOSCOW, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AND AMONG THE MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS WAITING AT THE AIRPORT TO FORMALLY WELCOME HIM WAS THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR, SIR THOMAS BROMLEY.

NINE HOURS AFTER COLONEL BOUMEDIENNE'S ARRIVAL, THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR WAS CALLED TO FOREIGN MINISTRY TO BE INFORMED OFFICIALLY OF THE DECISION TO BREAK DIPLOMATIC LINKS. IT IS NOT CLEAR JUST HOW MANY OF THE EMBASSY STAFF WILL BE AFFECTED BY THE DECISION AND WHEN THEY WILL BE LEAVING.

(BRITAIN IS ALGERIA'S SECOND LARGEST TRADING PARTNER AFTER FRANCE WITH TRADE EXCHANGES RUNNING AT THE RATE OF GBP25-MILLION STERLING-A-YEAR. ALGERIA HAS A CURRENT FAVOURABLE TRADING BALANCE OF GBP9-MILLION).
