The leaders, including President Ngarta Tombalbaye of Chad, President ???xtar Ould Daddah of Mauritania, King Moshoeshoe II of Lesotho and President Sir Seretse Khama of Botswana, attended the celebrations in the 26th May Stadium in Kinshasa.

Portugal's Foreign Minister, Dr. Mario Soares, was among the guests.

Huge crowds of Zairians gathered in the stadium and cheered each arrival enthusiastically.

Zaire's President Mobutu Sese Seko came into power on 25 November 1965, after a bloodless coup d'etat deposed the civilian government of the late president Joseph Kasavubu. President Mobutu who led the coup was then Army Commander-in-Chief.

SYNOPSIS: President Ngarta Tombalbaye of Chad was among the first guests to arrive at the Twentieth May Stadium in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire, for the nation's ninth anniversary celebrations on Sunday (24 November)
President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania and his wife also attended the celebrations
King Moshoeshoe of Lesotho was another of the many African leaders greeted by enthusiastic crowds in the stadium.

The host, Zaire's President Mobutu Sese Seko, took over the leadership of his country after a bloodless coup d'etat in 1965, which toppled the late President Joseph Kasavubu. President Mobutu, who led the coup, was then Army Commander-in-Chief. Later, President Mobutu announced that he was to take over the Presidency for five years. And, in 19701, when a presidential election was formally held, President Mobutu received ten million votes against one hundred and fifty-seven. He was the sole candidate.

Another of the guests at the celebrations was Portugal's Foreign Minister, Dr. Mario Soares. On his arrival, Dr. Soares said he was attending the celebrations to re-establish friendly relations between Zaire and Portugal, and to speed up the de-colonisation of Portuguese territories in Africa.

Many Africa leaders had travelled to Zaire for the anniversary of the accession to power to President Mobutu. The annual occasion is, however, not celebrated on the same day every year. Last year's celebrations were held on twenty-fifth and the year before on twenty-seventh of November.
