Background: Chinese Vice-Premier Chen Yong-Kuei arrived at Mexico City's airport from Peking on Thursday (27 March) to a warm and typically Mexican reception.
He was mobbed at the airport by an enthusiastic crowd and was presented with a sombrero and Mexican blanket, which he sportingly wore across the tarmac to the airport's arrival lounge.
Mr. Chen--one of the leading figures of China's agrarian revolution--will spend most of his nine-day visit touring farming areas. He is expected to visit Sonora, Sinaloa and possibly Tabsasco.
Mexican President Luis Echeverria invited Mr. Chen to visit in April 1973, when the President visited the model Techai production Brigade, where Mr. Chen was then Party Secretary.
Mr. Chen's visit is seen as part of the Mexican Government's effort to modernise the country's lagging agriculture.
