  • Description

An estimated 50-thousand people joined a protest rally in a Tokyo park on Tuesday, organised jointly by Japan's opposition parties and labour organisations. It was called to demonstrate against proposals put forward by Japan's Prime Minister, Kakuei Tanaka, which would alter the country's election system.

Banner-waving members of Japanese trades unions heard a leading Socialist, Ishi Bashi, and a leading Communist, Tetsuzi Fawa, denounce the proposals as gerrymandering. The proposed system would provide Japan with one-man constituencies, instead of the present system under which each constituency elects several members of Parliament.

After hearing the speakers, the protesters set off on a demonstration march, which took them into the streets of Tokyo.
