  • Description

Six of the crew of the rebel-held Portuguese liner, 'Santa Maria', of the eight landed at Santa Lucia (Antilles) Jan 24, arrived back in Lisbon, by air, Jan 29.

A large force of newsmen questioned them at the airport before the men were able to rejoin their families.

They said that not more than five or six Portuguese figured among the rebels led by Captain Galvao. "Everything happened very suddenly just as the ship's watch was being changed at midnight (Jan 21). Galvao and his men, mostly Spaniards, swooped into the engine room, armed with machine-guns and grenades. The ship's master could do nothing against these armed men. The seizure was a total surprise."
The same day as the men's return to Lisbon, Brazil's incoming President Janio Quadros offered refuge to the rebels. He said he was an old friend of Galvao and would not turn the ship over to the Portuguese, authorities.
