  • Description

TWO RIVAL GROUPS STAGED MAY DAY MARCHES THROUGH THE STREETS OF LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BUT GOOD MANAGEMENT BY THE POLICE AVERTED ANY TROUBLE. ONE GROUP, COMPRISING DOCKWORKERS, MARCHED FROM LONDON'S DOCK AREA TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, CHANTING SLOGANS AGAINST COLOURED IMMIGRATION INTO BRITAIN. THE OTHER WAS MADE UP MAINLY OF STUDENTS FROM THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS, ANARCHISTS AND COMMUNISTS. THEY MARCHED FROM THE TOWER OF LONDON TO TRANSPORT HOUSE, HEADQUARTERS OF THE LABOUR PARTY.

THE STUDENT MARCHERS WERE DRESSED IN MAINLY "HIPPIE" GEAR. THEY SEEMED TO HAVE A NUMBER OF GRIEVANCES, INCLUDING THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT'S WAGE FREEZE, THE RECENT SPEECH BY CONSERVATIVE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, MR ENOCH POWELL, AND THE MINISTER FOR PRODUCTIVITY AND EMPLOYMENT, MRS BARBARA CASTLE. MR POWELL WAS THE MAIN TARGET OF THE DEMONSTRATORS. THEY CONDEMNED HIS SPEECH WHICH HAD CALLED FOR A CURB OF COLOURED IMMIGRATION. ONE PLACARD HAD THE SLOGAN "HITLER '38. POWELL '68." THE 500 MARCHERS KEPT UP THE CHANT "ARREST POWELL, ARREST POWELL" AS THEY MADE THEIR WAY TO TRANSPORT HOUSE. THE PRO-COLOURED GROUP AND THE DOCKER'S PARADE MISSED EACH OTHER BY ONLY FIVE MINUTES AS THE POLICE WORKED HARD TO MAKE SURE THAT THEIR ROUTES WOULD NOT CLASH.
