A 13-year-old Sydney Ilsa Konrads may tonight become the New South Wales champion in the 440 yards freestyle swim at the Olympic pool. At her Bankstown home today, the swimming star spent the day quietly with her family.
Ilsa Konrads began swimming five years ago with her brother Jon, and both are now champions, strongly tipped for selection for the Cardiff Empire Games. They keep to a strict diet while in training. Last night Ilsa won her heat of the 440 yards in less than five minutes - and became the second woman in the world to break that time over a long course pool. Today, she was forbidden to enter the water by her coach, but went with her brother for a limber up after lunch.
At Bankstown Pool, where the two young swimmers train, they prepared for a light work-out of calisthenics. Normally both of them swim for four hours every day - Jon covers about seven or eight miles, and Ilsa about six miles. Today Jon forecast that his sister would win the title - or at least come second to Lorraine Crapp. Ilsa Konrads - a 13 year old who may become State Champion.
