  • Description

Belgium's Prince Albert, who is leading a high powered trade mission to the Philippines, held talks with President Ferdinand Marcos Monday (16 November) to discuss ways of expanding economic relations between the two countries.

SYNOPSIS: The Prince, who arrived in Manila Saturday (24 November) with a nine member team, was welcomed at the airport with military honours.

He told a press conference that he hoped to further develop trade and study investment opportunities in the Philippines.

The trade delegation represents 55 Belgian firms in the fields of metals, electrical construction, engineering, and consultancy.

At a meeting with President Marcos, Prince Albert discussed ways of increasing the flow of trade in both directions.

Trade between the two countries in 1978 totalled 87 million US dollars, but it left the Philippines with a 60 million US dollar deficit.

For the first seven months of this year the deficit has been reduced to two million US dollars.

During his four day visit, Prince Albert, Belgium's heir to the throne, will receive an honourary doctorate in economics from St. Louis University.
