  • Description

The Anglo-French supersonic airliner Concorde touched down at Rio International Airport on Monday (6 Sept) before a crowd of several thousand Brazilians, in the course of a 12-day sales promotion flight around South America. The huge aircraft landed at Rio just three hours and 25 minutes after leaving Cayenne in French Guiana. For nine minutes during the flight Concorde had flown at twice the speed of sound off the North Brazilian coast. The trip was reported to have been "very smooth".

When Concorde pulled up on the tarmac it displayed from its front cabin windows the Brazilian flag and Britain's Union Jack. Later the French Tricolour replaced the Union Jack as a demonstration of the joint nature of the venture. Chief Test Pilot, Andre Turcat, later told reporters he was proud to have been able to display such a "beautiful" machine. Its expected that within three years the Anglo-French airliner will be in regular service with commercial operators on the world's longer routes.
