  • Description

FOUR HUNDRED UNITED STATES MARINES, TOGETHER WITH 16 HEAVY HELICOPTERS AND TONS OF EQUIPMENT, ARRIVED IN SOUTH VIETNAM APRIL 15 TO REINFORCE U.S. ARMY UNITS ASSISTING GOVERNMENT FORCES IN OPERATIONS AGAINST THE COMMUNIST VIET-CONG GUERILLAS. THEY WERE FLOWN ASHORE FROM THE CONVERTED AIRCRAFT CARRIER "PRINCETON", LYING OFF THE COAST IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA.

QUICKLY ESTABLISHING THEMSELVES ON AN AIRSTRIP NEAR SACTRANG, CAPITAL OF THE BA KUYEN PROVINCE, SOME 100-MILES SOUTH-WEST OF SAIGON, THE TOUGH MARINES WERE SOON READY FOR ACTION. THIS WAS QUICK IN COMING, FOR ON APRIL 22 TWO FULL COMPANIES OF U.S. MILITARY HELICOPTERS - THE LARGEST HELICOPTER FORCE YET USED IN SOUTH VIETNAM - SPENT THE ENTIRE DAY SHUTTLING GOVERNMENT TROOPS IN AMMAJOR MOPPING-UP OPERATION IN THE MEKONG RIVER PLAZA. IN ALL, 29 HELICOPTERS WERE USED.

ABOUT 1,200 GOVERNMENT TROOPS, HALF OF WHOM WERE AIRLIFTED TO THEIR TARGETS, PARTICIPATED IN A SWEEP OF CANALS AND VILLAGES K 80-MILES SOUTH-EAST OF SAIGON IN THE KIEN PHONG PROVINCE. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY FAILED TO MAKE CONTACT WITH A SIZEABLE COMMUNIST FORCE. CASUALTIES WERE LIGHT. AT THE END OF THE DAY, ONLY TWO VIET-CONG HAD DEFINITELY BEEN KILLED AND TWO OTHERS WOUNDED. ABOUT 20 PRISONERS SUSPECTED OF BEING VIET-CONG WERE TAKEN.
