Background: Talks on Rhodesia's constitutional future are due to begin in the Swiss city of Geneva later this month as African leaders interested in the situation have been holding a series of meetings in recent weeks. On ???ursday (14 October), Zaire President Mobutu Sese Seko continued his tour of French-speaking West African countries with a visit to Gabon. Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema joined him there.
SYNOPSIS: President Eyadema was greeted at Libreville Airport by Gabonese President Omar Bongo. The Togolese leader made no official statement on the purpose of his visit to Gabon, but the two countries have a number of co-operation agreements and it was thought the two men would discuss the strengthening of those ties. President Eyadema was accompanied by his Education Minister, Yaya Malou, and the Togolese Minister of Information, Post and Telecommunications, Kwaovi Benyi Johnson. There were unconfirmed reports that the two Presidents discussed the situation in southern Africa and in particular, Rhodesia.
The reports were given some credence with the same-day arrival of President Mobutu. The Zaire leader met President Eyadema earlier this month during a visit to Togo. In Togo, he said he fully supported the United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, in his diplomatic efforts in southern Africa. Dr. Kissinger's peace plans for Rhodesia, due to be discussed in Geneva, were put to African leaders during his recent tour. President Mobutu played a part in the discussions with Dr. Kissinger and he is now reported to be briefing other African leaders on the talks.
Apart from his visits to Gabon and Togo, President Mobutu has also met Senegalese President Leopold Senghor.
