  • Description

INDONESIAN AUTHORITIES HAVE RELEASED 236 "C-CLASS" PRISONERS SUSPECTED OF SYMPATHISING WITH THE INDONESIAN COMMUNIST PARTY.

THE RELEASE OF THE 230 MEN AND SIX WOMEN LAST SATURDAY (28 FEBRUARY) ENDED THREE YEARS IN JAIL FOR MOST OF THEM. THEY WERE GIVEN THEIR RELEASE PAPERS AND 100 RUPIAH, ABOUT 30 US CENTS, AND THE CLOTHES THEY WORE. APART FROM MILITARY AND PRISON AUTHORITIES, NEWSMEN WERE THE ONLY OUTSIDERS TO WITNESS THE RELEASE CEREMONY. ONE OF THE DETAINEES, MR NUGROHO, WAS A FORMER NEWSMAN WITH THE INDONESIAN NEW AGENCY "ANTARA".

COLONEL URIPWIDODO, ASSISTANT POLITICAL AFFAIRS ADVISOR TO THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT, WARNED THE GROUP TO KEEP WELL CLEAR OF COMMUNISTS AND COMMUNISM. EACH WAS REQUIRED TO SWEAR AN OATH OF LOYALTY TO THE INDONESIAN CONSTITUTION AND SOCIAL CODE.

THE PRISONERS LOOKED WELL-FED AND CHEERFUL, WAVING TO GUARDS AS THEY BOARDED TRUCKS TAKING THEM HOME. MOST OF THEM WERE BOUND FOR DJAKARTA. THOSE FREED ARE AMONG THE FIRST SIX THOUSAND OF ABOUT TWENTY THOUSAND "C-CLASS" PRISONERS DUE FOR RELEASE.
