In Spain, hundreds of people attended the funeral of a municipal policeman who was shot dead in Madrid on Friday (12 January). Officer Romero Garcia de Montejo was buried with full honours on Saturday (13 January).
SYNOPSIS: Officer Montejo died instantly when gunmen, opened fire at him with a sawn-off shotgun. He was one of three policemen attacked in separate incidents on Friday, but he other two escaped injury. Officer Montejo was married with two children.
Officer Montejo belonged to no political party or organisation and he was about o complete twenty-five years service with Madrid's Municipal Police Force. Nobody has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack, and no motive is known.
Seven people have been killed in politically - motivated murders in Spain his year. The victims include the Military Governor of Madrid, a Supreme Court Judge, and another policeman who was shot dead in Madrid last month. The Basque separatist organisation, ETA, claimed responsibility for all but one of the killings.
ETA is fighting for an independent Marxist state in the Basque region, and hopes to achieve this by provoking a popular uprising in the Basque provinces.
