    TWO IRISH BISHOPS TOURED THE FLASHPOINT CITY OF LONDONDERRY TODAY (SATURDAY) PLEADING FOR CATHOLICS AND PROTESTANTS TO REFRAIN FROM FURTHER VIOLENCE. THE TOUR WAS MADE BY CATHOLIC BISHOP OF DERRY, THE MOST REVEREND DR. NEIL FARREN, AND THE PROTESTANT CHURCH OF IRELAND'S LORD BISHOP OF DERRY, DR. CHARLES TINDALL.

    THE CHURCHMEN TOURED THE CATHOLIC BOGSIDE AREA OF LONDONDERRY, THE SCENE OF RECENT VIOLENCE. THEY INSPECTED BROKEN WINDOWS AND OTHER DAMAGE CAUSED IN LAST WEEK'S RIOTING, AND SPOKE TO PEOPLE IN THE STREETS.

    DR TINDALL SAID THAT HE WAS TRYING BY AN ACT OF RELIGIOUS HARMONY TO CREATE TRUST AMONG ALL SECTIONS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE BISHOPS HOPED THAT A SHOW OF UNITY WOULD COOL PASSIONS AROUSED BY CATHOLIC-PROTESTANT STREET CLASHES AND SABOTAGE BY TERRORISTS CIVIL RIGHT DEMANDS MADE BY NORTHERN IRELAND'S CATHOLIC MINORITY. THEY WERE ACCOMPANIED BY METHODIST AND PRESBYTERIAN REPRESENTATIVES.

    MEANWHILE, ABOUT 200 BRITISH TROOPS WERE LANDED BY R.A.F. HERCULE'S TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT AT ALDERSGROVE AIRPORT NEAR BELFAST. THEY ARE THE ADVANCE GUARD OF ABOUT 500 BRITISH TROOPS BRITAIN IS SENDING OVER THE WEEKEND TO REINFORCE THE BRITISH MILITARY GARRISON AND HELP PROTECT VITAL INSTALLATIONS AGAINST FURTHER SABOTAGE.
