  • Description

The second day of Wimbledon -- the world's most prestigious lawn tennis competition -- opened in glorious sunshine, a dramatic contrast to the first day's play which was stopped by rain.

Two seeded American players came to the fore on Tuesday (24 June). Arthur Ashe, the sixth seed, defeated South African Bob Hewitt on the sun-drenched centre court. But Ashe, from Miami, Florida, had an unimpressive victory of 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. He produced nothing like his best form in his resumed first-round clash with hewitt. The American resumed with a one-set lead after play was halted the previous day by rain. Australian-born Hewitt took the second set but lapsed into a series of errors. He served six double faults in his last three services games of the third set and then had two more in the 10th game of the fourth set.

American Chris Evert, the top women's seed, made an uncompromising start to the defence of her title, beating 19-year-old Chris O'Neill of Australia 6-0, 6-2 in 40 minutes.

Miss Evert from Fort Lauderdale, florida, performed with her usual efficiency which won her the Wimbledon title last year. She was playing her first match on grass after a month on the slow clay courts of Europe where she retained her Italian and French titles.
