  • Description

The gigantic Khefren Pyramid at Giza a few miles southwest of Cairo a joint scientific team form Egypt and the United States has begun an electronic probe of its innermost secrets.

The team started work last Saturday to determine if there are any hidden chambers in the pyramid.

Two chambers have already been found; one is thought to have belonged to Khefran, who built the huge stone edifice, the other to his queen. When they were opened, in 1818, both were empty.

It was thought grave robbers had preceded the archaeologists. The new study will use radio and radar waves to probe through the stone in search of other cavities.

Some experts believe that the tow known chambers contained persons of lesser stature than Khefren to fool tomb-robbers. They say the pharaoh may still lie in a secret tomb in the pyramid surrounded by his wealth.

The team is concentrating its search in the apparently solid area between the main known chamber and the smaller one below it.
