  • Description

BETWEEN FORTY AND FIFTY MEMBERS OF THE WELSH LANGUAGE SOCIETY LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY) STAGED A SIT-IN AT THE BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION STUDIO IN CARDIFF AND BANGOR. THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE FACT THAT B.B.C.'s WEEKLY PROGRAMMES INCLUDED 480 HOURS OF ENGLISH-LANGUAGE TRANSMISSIONS TO WALES; 70 HOURS OF ARABIC TO THE ARABS; YET ONLY 18 HOURS OF WELSH FOR THE WELSH.

DURING THE SEVEN HOURS THAT THE PROTESTERS SPENT IN THE CARDIFF STUDIO, THEY CUT TELEPHONE LINES AND TURNED OUT FILES. THE BBC, HOWEVER, WAS NOT TOO PERTURBED AND DID NOT ALLOW THE PROTEST TO INTERFERE WITH THEIR BROADCASTS, WHICH THEY CONTINUED FROM OTHER BBC BUILDINGS IN THE CITY.

IN BANGOR, THOUGH THE DEMONSTRATORS STAYED LONGER (TWELVE HOURS) THEY WERE QUIETER AND LEFT WITHOUT INCIDENT. NO ARRESTS WERE MADE.

THE HOME MINISTER, MR. JAMES CALLAGHAN, TODAY (SATURDAY) SAID THAT HE "DEPLORED" THE "UNMANNERLY BEHAVIOUR" OF THE DEMONSTRATORS, AND ADDED THAT SUCH AN INTRUSION SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED BY A CIVILISED SOCIETY.
