  • Description

IN BRAZZAVILLE, MAJOR NGOUABI HAS TAKEN THE OATH AS PRESIDENT OF THE NEWLY-NAMED CONGO PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC, FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE REPUBLIC OF CONGO. MAJOR NGOUABI LED THE ARMY COUP WHICH TOOK OVER THE COUNTRY IN AUGUST 1968 AND LATER HEADED THE NATIONAL REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL WHICH RULED THE COUNTRY.

ON NEW YEAR'S EVE THE COUNTRY CAME UNDER THE RULE OF THE NEWLY-FORMED CONGOLESE LABOUR PARTY. THE PARTY WAS FORMED TO TAKE OVER POWER FROM THE REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL. MAJOR NGOUABI WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE PARTY, AND AS IT IS THE ONLY POLITICAL PARTY IN THE COUNTRY, HE AUTOMATICALLY BECAME PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTRY AT THE SAME TIME. ONE OF THE FIRST ACTIONS OF THE NEW PARTY WAS TO ADOPT A NEW NATIONAL ANTHEM AND FLAG.

AT HIS OATH-TAKING, PRESIDENT NGOUABI SWORE "FIDELITY TO THE CONGOLESE PEOPLE, TO THE REVOLUTION AND THE CONGOLESE LABOUR PARTY". HE ALSO VOWED TO BE GUIDED BY THE PRINCIPLES OF MARXIST-LENINISM.

MAJOR ALFRED RAOUL, WHO WAS PRIME MINISTER UNDER THE REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL, HAS BECOME VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE NEW PARTY.

THE NAMES OF SOME MINISTERS OF THE NEW PARTY HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED.
