    KENYA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) CELEBRATED THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INDEPENDENCE AND THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF BECOMING A REPUBLIC. FESTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY INCLUDED A NAIROBI CEREMONY IN WHICH PRESIDENT KENYATTA PRESENTED NEW REGIMENTAL COLOURS TO THE FIRST, THIRD AND FIFTH BATTALIONS OF THE KENYA RIFLES.

    IN A MESSAGE TO THE NATION YESTERDAY, PRESIDENT KENYATTA ANNOUNCED THE RELEASE OF MORE THAN 3,000 PRISONERS TO MARK KENYA'S ANNIVERSARY. PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID KENYA HAD SHOWN THE WORLD THAT PEOPLE OF MANY ORIGINS COULD LIVE HAPPILY TOGETHER IN AN AFRICAN COUNTRY.

    HOWEVER, HE SAID, KENYA CONSIDERED THAT THE MAJORITY IN A COUNTRY SHOULD GOVERN. THE RIGHTS OF THE MINORITIES COULD ONLY BE PROTECTED BY THE MAJORITY. "THAT IS WHY WE CONDEMN THE WHITE MINORITY REGIMES IN RHODESIA, SOUTH AFRICA AND MOZAMBIQUE", HE DECLARED.
