Background: Several thousand young people demonstrated in San Francisco on Tuesday (Dec 1) against the presence in the city of General Nguyen Ky, Vice President of South Vietnam. Ky has been invited to make a speech to the city's Commonwealth Club. The demonstrators clashed repeatedly with helmeted police who were out in force. Twelve demonstrators were arrested.
The demonstrators carried placards with anti-Ky slogans as they attempted to break through the police lines. But the police were ready for them in overpowering strength. Some demonstrators threw rocks at the police, several of whom were injured. Twelve of the youths were hustled from the scene, many in vice-like armholds of husky policemen. One demonstrators managed to slip inside the hall where Ky was speaking, but was ejected from the meeting.
