  • Description

For the fiftieth year, the World Marbles Team Championships were held at Tinsley Green, Crawley, near Gatwick Airport in England, on Good Friday (28 March).

The event -- sponsored by the British Isle Marbles Association -- featured a new attraction this year: an International Challenge Trophy, which was competed for by eight teams, including South Africa, France, the West Indies and the United States.

In the end, it was the young American team -- which put on a strong showing at last year's competition -- that captured the international championship by defeating their English opponents two points to one.

The real battle royal, however, was for the team championship, between the Toucan Terribles, looking for their twentieth consecutive win, and some 20 other teams. Competition was keen, but experience paid off, and the Toucan Terribles made it 20 straight.
